THE ORIGINS OF MUNDRABILLA ROADHOUSE AND STATION
Mundrabilla Roadhouse and Station are located on the Roe Plains, framed by the Hampton Tablelands and the coast. The plains stretch about 40 km wide and extend for 250 km from Eucla to Twilight Cove near Eyre. Named after John Septimus Roe, Western Australia’s first Surveyor General, these plains were once a source of sandalwood, exported to the Far East.
Mundrabilla Station was established in 1872 by the Kennedy brothers, Thomas and William, along with William McGill. After a challenging 1,200 km journey from Albany with 1,500 sheep, they found better grazing lands and sufficient water at Mundrabilla. Despite hardships, including the tragic loss of Annie McGill during childbirth in 1879 and Thomas Kennedy’s death following an encounter with locals, the station survived and remains a working cattle station today. In 1972 the Mundrabilla Roadhouse was established to cater to those travelling they Eyre Highway.
